Research and Innovation for Delivering Agroforestry Applications to Farmers
PROJECTS
ANCIENT AGROFORESTRY
This project is being implemented in partnership with the Tropical Science Center. The project is studying and optimizing the indigenous agroforestry systems of the Talamanca region to replicate them in other areas of Costa Rica.
SILVOPASTORAL SYSTEMS
This project is being implemented at Costa Rica's Technical University campus in Atenas. Its aim is to serve as a model for research, education and adoption to enhance the economic and environmental performance of cattle farms in the Tropical Dry Forest Ecosystem of Central America.
SAILCARGO'S TREES FOR SEAS
SailCargo Inc. is a Costa Rican-Canadian company dedicated to the construction of Ceiba, the first emissions-free cargo ship in the world. The sailboat is being built in Punta Morales de Chomes in Puntarenas with sustainably harvested wood. The boat will carry 200 tons of gourmet coffee, cacao and honey produced in agroforestry systems to markets in North America using renewable energy such as wind and solar power. Our contribution to this project is the technical direction of the Trees for Seas initiative, which is part of the Trillion Trees Campaign and it aims to replant the wood that is being used for the construction of Ceiba and mitigate the GHG emissions generated during this process. More than 5000 trees have been planted (out of the 12,000 goal) in new agroforestry systems and secondary forests near the shipyard.
FINCA LINDA VISTA
Finca Linda Vista is an experimental agroforestry farm located in San Luis de Monteverde, Puntarenas. Despite its rugged topography, for over 50 years the land was used intensively for cattle farming. The farm is gradually being transformed into an agroforestry model and will serve as an example of landscape restoration.
